what would be a good starter Motorcycle?

i am 22, i want to get a bike but i am not sure if i want sport or Cruiser?
i am also wanting to know how much gas will i save. i have a 2005 jeep wrangler.

Sport bikes and cruisers are for different purposes.

Cruisers are more ‘general purpose’, easier to ride, lower center of gravity so they’re more forgiving. They are for ‘cruising’, i.e. not pushing the envelope, just relaxed, enjoyable riding. Cruisers also have an advantage for short people, a seat that’s lower to the ground.

Sport bikes today are deadly serious single-purpose machines. They are indeed engineering marvels, masterpieces of technology, but they are built for handling and speed, and all other considerations are compromised. They are not comfortable for long rides, they are twitchy and high-strung like thoroughbred racehorses and they are not forgiving. They are really not for beginners. I’m talking about the -real- sport bikes, Honda CBR, Suzuki GSX-R, Yamaha R series. There are many more general-purpose motorcycles that are styled like sport bikes but are really more ‘standards’ like the Kawasaki Ninja and Suzuki Bandit.

Another minus of those serious sportbikes is that just tipping one over on the driveway can cost as much as $2000 in replacement plastic body parts (or ‘Tupperware’ as we call it).

You can learn a lot by just -sitting- on a bike. If you know people with bikes, ask if you can sit on them. See if you can put your feet flat on the ground–that’s important, especially in a first bike. Put the bike on the centerstand and sit on the seat with your hands on the handlebars and your feet on the pegs, and ask yourself “Could I sit like this for two hours?”

I would recommend that you take the MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) and that you get a used bike to start out on, something maybe ten years old. You’re going to be hard on your first bike. You’re going to abuse the clutch. You might drop it once or twice before you get the hang of it. If you buy an older bike to start out, after a year or so you can sell it for about what you paid for it, and then you will have a better idea what you really want.

Most bikes (not super high-performance or super-big) get around 45 mpg, which I’d guess is about twice what your Wrangler gets. But there are other expenses in a bike. Tires cost as much as car tires but only get about 10,000 miles. If the bike is chain drive you need a new chain every 20,000 mi. or so. Insurance might be more, I don’t know, but it’s worth checking out. Bikes are a lot more fun, but that doesn’t enter into the money equation.

Please remember that half of all motorcycle accidents, and half of all fatalities, happen to riders with less than a year’s experience. So safety is your main concern for at least the first year. Take the safety course. Wear at least a helmet, jacket and gloves. And don’t be what your grandparents used to call a ‘hot dog’.
